Beside giving the substitute teacher the lowdown on the class with such things as bathroom procedures and attendance taking, you need to give them a lesson plan. There are a few apps that can help with your lesson planning and make it easy for both you and the substitute teacher. Even though your gone, you still want your students to have a productive day. The following three apps can help.

Nearpod: Nearpod is not only a great interactive presentation app, but it’s also great for sub days. As a matter of fact, Nearpod has a sub feature as part of the app. What makes Nearpod so good for sub days is that the teacher can fill Nearpod with a variety of activities, from essay questions, to drawing activities, to video, to formative assessments. Simply have the teacher direct the students to Nearpod.com (or, if you’re using iPads in your class, ask them to open the app) and give them the code. That’s all the substitute teacher would need to do as far as delivering the lesson. Students can work on the Nearpod at their own pace (this is a paid feature).

Pear Deck: Like Nearpod, Pear Deck is a fantastic interactive presentation app. And, like Nearpod, the teacher can prepare a lesson where students can work through it at their own pace. Pear Deck allows for the insertion of drawing activities, videos, and essay questions. The substitute teacher points the class to Pear Deck and passes along the code.

Socrative: With Socrative, the teacher can incorporate short answer, true/false, and multiple choice questions. Socrative allows for the insertion of pictures or documents that students can reference while addressing each question. Give students the name of the room and their off and running. Simply ask the students to point their Chromebooks to Socrative.com or open the iPad student app.
